LUKE DIDN’T GET BACK until three-fifteen, a lot later than he’d planned. He left the lumber in the truck and went inside to look for Annie. The aroma of freshly baked apple pie filled the kitchen. The source sat on the stove beside two foil-covered casserole dishes. He got closer and smelled lasagna, too. His stomach rumbled.

Annie walked in, her hair piled messily on top of her head, several loose strands curling around her flushed face. Her shorts were rolled up almost to the point of indecency, making his pulse speed. “I didn’t hear you.”“Just got here.” He met her halfway and caught her around the waist. Pulling her against him, he kissed her but, although she seemed willing enough, something was wrong. He coaxed her lips open but the enthusiasm wasn’t quite there. “Hey,” he said, drawing back, looking at her. “It took longer than I expected. I probably should’ve called.”

She smiled. “It’s okay. I figured you’d be a while. How much was the lumber?”

“I forget. The receipt’s in the truck.” He gestured to the stove. “You’ve been busy.”

“Not me.” She shrugged her shoulders and went to the table and picked up a pad of paper. “Let’s see…the apple pie and chicken and dumplings are from Barb. The lasagna is from Janice. Sally Jo and Melinda didn’t bring you anything, but they want you to call. In fact, they all asked that you call.” She handed him the list, her face expressionless. “Sally Jo is the only one who didn’t leave her number. I figured you have it.”

Luke stared at the scribbling. Did the whole goddamn town know he was here? When he got a hold of that Billy, he was gonna kick his scrawny…

“I had no idea you were so popular.” Annie went to the fridge and got out the pitcher of lemonade. “You’re quite the celebrity.”

“Yeah, right.”

“Did you even know you have a fan club?” Her back was to him as she got out two glasses, her posture as rigid as a branding iron.

Obviously, there was no telling what one of those women had said about him. He tore off the top sheet, crumpled it in his fist and tossed it into the trash can under the sink. So much for laying low. Now what was he gonna do?

She glanced at him, and then her gaze went to the trash can. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

“I’m not calling them.”

“Then they’ll just show up again. But if you call and tell them you’re passing through and that you’re leaving tonight, they might back off.”

“What did you tell them?”

“Only that you weren’t here.”

She had a point. He retrieved the paper.

“For what it’s worth, each one said they hadn’t told anyone else you’re here.”

The humor in her voice should have been reassuring, only it irritated the hell out of him. But that wasn’t fair, because she didn’t know the stakes. She didn’t understand that this meant he had to leave.
